The Post Office estimates that shoppers will be able to save up to 62 per cent on Christmas shopping in the US this year.

Boston is cheaper than New York for Christmas shopping, but the Big Apple is still the UK’s top choice for a city break.

Despite Sterling falling by 25 per cent in value since 2007, when £1 was worth $2, there are still huge savings to be made on shopping across the Atlantic.

The Post Office Shopping Guide has revealed that the “UK Dream Dozen” toys are at least a third cheaper in the States. The Post Office also found that the top ten must-have items, including toys, men’s and women’s gifts, and electrical items, would set shoppers back by £1,296 in London.

The same items cost 45 per cent less in New York and Las Vegas, coming in at £716 in New York and £710 in Las Vegas. But shopaholics could save even more in Boston. At £664 for the top ten gifts, prices in Boston are 49 per cent cheaper than in London.

“When it comes to a battle for the best bargains, Boston wins out because sales tax is lower than in New York and clothing that costs under $175 (£113) is exempt.  What’s more, Boston package prices are cheaper than New York and the city has the shops to match the Big Apple,” said Sarah Munro, Post Office Head of Travel Money.

“Prices in the USA are so much lower than in London that two people could pool their duty-free allowances of £390 and have more than enough to buy all ten items in Boston, New York or Las Vegas.”

Holidaymakers planning pre-Christmas flights to the States can purchase US dollars on-demand from over 4,000 Post Office bureaux nationwide. Alternatively, customers can pre-order dollars for next-day collection at all Post Office branches, or order online for branch or home delivery.
