With the price of petrol only accelerating its heady ascent, hotels in California have started issuing “gas cards” to their guests, throwing in up to $25 (£15) worth of free petrol for their patrons when they check-in for some of their offers.

The pump price in California is currently hovering at around $4 (£2.50) per gallon, so Marriott Hotels have added a $25 gas card to their California Road Trip Package. This package can be used at a host of locations around the Golden State, including Bakersfield, La Jolla, San Bruno, San Diego and San Francisco and is valid through to September 6 this year.

Not to be left behind, the Riviera Palm Springs hotel, provides a $25 “gas pass” and free valet parking to its guests who are paying top rates at the resort, starting from $239 (£149) plus tax per night. The offer lasts until May 26, for all who mention “freegaspasspromo” when they check in.

The three Personality Hotels in San Francisco – the Kensington Park Hotel, Hotel Diva and Hotel Union Square – are all taking part in the chain’s Get Pumped Up package. It includes a $10 (£6.20) gas card and free valet parking with rooms that start at $169 (£105) a night plus tax, and is applicable through to December 30 this year for bookings made before April 16.
