Doncaster Sheffield Robin Hood Airport was officially opened today, just two years after the first passenger flights took off.

While attending events in the region, the Duke of York performed the opening ceremony which was cancelled in March due to heavy fog, the BBC reports.

The airport began operations in April 2005, on the site of the former RAF Finningley, and boasts one of the longest runways in the UK at just under two miles long.

Now overseen by Peel Holdings, Robin Hood Airport has handled around 1.75 million passengers since opening and offers flights to more than 45 destinations across the world, including a link to Canada that started last week.
