The number of passengers using East Midlands Airport has risen for the eighth successive quarter.

According to figures released by EMA, 1,195,747 people used the airport in the first three months of the year, a rise of 15.2 per cent compared to 2007’s volume.

The airport attributed the rise to the introduction of four new routes since the start of 2008, including First Choice’s route to Goa, Manx2’s service to the Isle of Man and new flights to Palma with easyJet.

A total of 460,552 passengers travelled to and from the airport in the month of March, an increase of 11.5 per cent. Easter trips provided a boost to numbers with 95,000 people using the airport over the holiday weekend, a rise of seven per cent compared to the period in 2007.

“The significant increases demonstrate that passengers are embracing the destinations and routes available from EMA,” said Penny Coates, managing director of the airport.
