East Midlands Airport has been named the UK’s best regional airport at the 2007 Travel Weekly Globe Awards.

The airport, a significant low-cost hub offering scheduled flights from bmibaby, easyJet and Ryanair, beat the likes of Manchester, Birmingham, Gatwick and Stansted to claim the prize.

Voted for by travel professionals, the Travel Weekly Globe Awards are prestigious honours that give the industry “a chance to recognise the elite”.

“We are absolutely delighted to have won the award for Best Regional UK Airport at the Travel Weekly Globe Awards, a title which has previously only been awarded to larger UK airports,” said Penny Coates, the airport’s managing director.

East Midlands Airport recently dropped “Nottingham” from the beginning of its name, a change it had originally made in 2004. Critics had argued that the name was misleading as the airfield lies closer to Derby than Nottingham.

However, it continues to successfully cater for a wide catchment area that also includes Leicester, offering more than 100 destinations.

Last week the airport announced that 2006 was its busiest year on record, with more than 4.7 million passengers passing through its doors.
