Edinburgh Airport has become Scotland’s busiest hub ahead of Glasgow, with nearly nine million passengers passing through between August 2006 and July 2007.
“We’re experiencing very strong growth,” managing director David Johnston told The Scotsman. “Sixteen new services have already come on board in 2007 and a further 12 will start later this year.”
Meanwhile the terrorist attack in June had a detrimental effect on passenger numbers at Glasgow Airport, which declined from 8,799,596 between August 2005 and July 2006 to 8,797,393 over the last year.
However, Johnston stressed that security was a top priority in Scottish aviation.
“We are extremely busy, but our key priorities remain security, safety and service,” he said. “Our newly opened security search area on the ground floor of the terminal is helping to ease congestion at peak times and ensuring 95 per cent of passengers pass through security within five minutes.”
Elsewhere in the UK, passenger numbers at Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport increased by 17.3 per cent year-on-year in July, with 120,000 travellers passing through.
At Birmingham Airport, passenger traffic was up by 0.8 per cent over the month.
