With the advent of the low-cost airline and increased availability of cheap short-haul flights, travel within Europe has become a more viable and attractive prospect to many. European city breaks offer a great deal of flexibility due to these inexpensive fares and low flight durations. Whereas long-haul destinations may be too costly and require too much travel to make shorter trips worthwhile, fulfilling weekend breaks in Europe are easy to arrange, whether for a couple or family wishing to see the sights and culture of one of the continent’s great metropolises or larger groups seeking fun and nightlife.

European city breaks are an excellent way to celebrate an occasion such as a birthday or an anniversary. A romantic Valentine’s Day jaunt to Paris, Rome, or Venice may appeal, or a trip to the Christmas Markets of Prague, Cologne, Vienna, or Tallinn during the festive period. To mark upcoming nuptials, stag weekend breaks in Europe are a popular choice, with Prague, Amsterdam, Berlin, Budapest and Dublin just a few ideal lively destinations for such a trip.

Attractions such as festivals, which may only last a matter of days, are also good reasons for a European city break. The likes of the Carnival of Venice, the Edinburgh Fringe, Berlin’s Love Parade, Oktoberfest in Munich, and the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona are all a few hours away via discount flights. Coinciding your weekend break in Europe with a sporting event is also a great way to make the most of your trip: football fans may wish to see their home team play against the teams of Milan or Madrid for instance.

Whether booked in advance to maximise savings or arranged at the last minute on the spur of the moment, with cheap flights and the right information, city breaks in Europe can be enjoyable, inexpensive and enlightening.
