Plans to quickly complete the public inquiry into Stansted Airport’s proposed second runway have been heavily criticised by opponents to the expansion.
According to The East Anglian Daily Times, campaigners are angry that the investigation looks set to be carried out in six months.
Parallel sessions that will examine various subjects likely to take place in separate inquiry rooms have the potential to “severely compromise” the ability of people who want to oppose to take part, the Stop Stansted Expansion Campaign has said.
Campaign director Carol Barbone told the newspaper: “The way in which the inspector is proposing to run the inquiry is an affront to the very principles of fairness and justice.”
The group is worried that residents will find it very difficult to accurately assess the extent if BAA’s plans and warned that the inquiry will not be carried out without succumbing to the influence of ministers.
If the major expansion at Stansted goes ahead, the airport could overtake Heathrow as London’s biggest and busiest airport. The inquiry programme is due to be discussed next Monday (November 10).
