Dense fog around Heathrow Airport has forced a number of airlines to abandon flights yet again today (December 21).

Airport operator BAA has revealed that 350 flights were cancelled yesterday as a result of adverse weather conditions and it is thought a similar number will remain grounded today. And with the Met Office forecasting that dense, freezing fog is unlikely to clear before the weekend, there are fears that flights will continue to be disrupted in the run-up to Christmas.

British Airways has already revealed that it has cancelled all domestic flights from Heathrow and the British flag carrier has also cancelled several European journeys. The airline announced this morning that it has so far cancelled 180 short-haul and domestic flights from Heathrow from a usual daily total of 400.

Early estimates indicate that Heathrow will only be able to manage half of its usual number of landings and take-offs during the course of the day.

All flights from Coventry have also been cancelled and those scheduled to fly from this airport are being transported to Birmingham by bus. Passengers in Cardiff have also encountered problems and a number of flights there have been cancelled already.

The problems at Britain’s airports have been exacerbated because of the time of year, with the Association of British Travel Agents estimating that three million people will leave the country between December 22 and January 2.

With some Manchester flights also cancelled today, the advice to passengers throughout the country is to check with the relevant airline before heading to the airport.
