A new direct route from Leeds Bradford Airport to Frankfurt could soon be launched, it has been reported.

According to The Yorkshire Post, officials from the airport are currently in talks with “an international airline” over the possibility of operating a link to the German city. It is thought that that airport is keen to offer a service to Frankfurt because it is such an important city for business and finance.

Speaking to the newspaper about the potential route, commercial and aviation development director Tony Hallwood said that Leeds is an important link from the UK to Germany’s “legal and financial sectors”.

He stressed that the airport is hoping that the opening of a route from Leeds to Frankfurt would also help to bolster tourist numbers to the Yorkshire town.

He was quoted by The Yorkshire Post as saying: “Frankfurt is the top of the list. It’s the centre of Germany’s legal and financial services sectors. Of course, Leeds follows London in terms of servicing both those sectors.

“We are very, very hopeful we should have further news in the early part of 2009 and we are very confident we will start the service at some stage during the year.”
