People planning to travel to mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel face further disruption today (October 6) due to a 24-hour strike by Belgian workers.

The industrial action will close Brussels Midi station along with the entire Belgian rail network, resulting in the cancellation of all connecting services to France, Holland and Germany.

It comes as Eurostar is still operating under a revised timetable following disruption caused by last month’s devastating fire.

Some 15,000 travellers were affected by the blaze, which broke out on a freight train in the north-bound tunnel and resulted in temperatures in excess of 1,000 degrees Celsius.

Cross-channel services had been allowed to resume while investigators combed through the wreckage, but with the latest strike a further backlog is now expected to build up.

Confirming the impact of the walkout, Eurostar stated: “Because of the constraints of the amended timetable – due to the Channel Tunnel incident in September – Eurostar will also not be able to operate a service between the UK and Lille on Monday, October 6.”

Anyone opting for alternative cheap flights to France is advised to approach their original point of sale for a refund.
