The 2008 Competition Commission directive requiring the sale of Gatwick Airport by BAA resulted in the airport being bought by a consortium led by Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) in December 2009. Already owners of London City Airport, the partnership made it clear that they intended to upgrade both passenger and airline facilities at Gatwick.

With a £1 billion ten-year investment programme already delivering improvements, the airport is now signalling its intention to be “London’s Airport of Choice” with a consumer-focused campaign highlighting why Gatwick should be a preferred choice for London and South-East based passengers.

According to the Airport’s website the benefits to passengers already achieved are:

• “a quick and convenient connection on new inter-terminal shuttle which opened in July 2010, two months early.”

• “quick and easy access into North Terminal through [a] new interchange which incorporates a new forecourt, shuttle station, lifts and escalators.”

• “more space, shops and restaurants in the extended South Terminal departure lounge.”

• “brighter, modernised gaterooms in South Terminal.”

Further improvements to both North and South terminals, respectively to check-in and security facilities that will speed up these processes and enhance the overall passenger experience of passing through Gatwick, will be completed this summer.
