At this time of year we all crave a bit of warm weather and sunshine to help us through the dark, chilly months.

With night time starting at around 4pm and the icy mornings making it harder than ever to get out of bed, we’re all dreaming of some much-needed winter sun.

But aside from just giving us an out-of-season tan and a bit of time off, it seems that a winter break in the sun could actually be good for our health.

Doctors have said that a week or two in the sun can bring a range of benefits, from topping up valuable Vitamin D supplies to staving off the winter blues.

“We produce most Vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones, in our skin, yet the strength of the sun in the UK over the winter months is not sufficient to produce enough, leaving many of us Vitamin D deficient,” said Dr Gill Jenkins, of the Whiteladies Health Centre in Bristol.

Vitamin D is a vital bone-strengthening vitamin, and just one top-up during the winter months can keep us going until summer rolls around.

Some summer sun can also be good for our mental health as, let’s face it, the seemingly endless winter months can be pretty depressing.

It can be harder to relax in the winter, which can lead to poor sleep and more irritability. So, a sun-soaked break could potentially help us to come back happier, more content and less stressed.

“Winter breaks also give us something to look forward to – the short days can affect our natural biorhythms and our hormone balance, making some of us feel down or depressed,” added Dr Jenkins.

“The psychology of having a winter break planned provides a positive goal to work towards to get you through the bleakest time of the year. Even if you decide to stay in the UK, occasionally escaping everyday life is good for you mentally and physically.”

So, if you’re considering jetting off into the sun this winter, remember that it’s not just about ditching work to relax by the pool – you’ll be doing your mental and physical health a favour too.
