Glasgow Prestwick Airport is to benefit from the launch of a new route to Jersey next summer, courtesy of the Channel Islands’ largest tour operator.

Jersey-based CI Travel Group has announced plans to offer direct flights every Saturday, beginning on June 19 and running through to September 11.

The new service will be operated by Flybe, Europe’s largest regional carrier, and will be marketed by various CI brands including Discover Jersey.

Spokesperson Paula Horne called the route a “double helping of good news” for Glasgow.

“Not only do we have a wonderful new sunshine route to the Channel Islands, but we also welcome Flybe … which is operating its first-ever scheduled service from the airport.”

Jersey is the most southerly of the British Isles, situated 100 miles from the south coast of England and a mere 14 miles from the coast of France.

Last month, low-cost carrier Ryanair said its 2010 summer schedule will include new flights from Prestwick to the historic French town of Carcassonne.
