Don’t feel guilty about splashing your cash – a fabulous holiday is no longer a luxury but an “essential part of life,” according to the Independent’s travel editor.

Simon Calder encouraged Britons to spend money on a great break – and it seems many of us are already doing so. Visa Europe’s third annual Visa Europe Travel Report revealed that UK travellers spent more than £9.8 billion whilst abroad last year, a rise of 18 per cent on the year before.

The most expensive part of the holiday was accommodation, with Brits splashing out £1.3 billion on hotels, self-catering apartments and other forms of accommodation last year. Activities, visiting attractions and excursions also featured high on traveller’s expenses, with a vast £693 being spent on these last year.

“Despite economic uncertainties at home over jobs and prices, two out of five Brits say they are determined to visit a more expensive destination this summer. A memorable holiday is no longer a luxury – it’s an essential part of life,” said Mr Calder.

It seems a good break is also a vital tool for relaxation – almost 40 per cent of UK travellers surveyed for the Visa Europe Travel Report reported that they were able to chill out and switch off from everyday concerns whilst on holiday.
