A 15-km (8-mile) boat ride from Alicante, the small island of Tabarca provides a peaceful refuge from Costa Blanca’s typical hustle and bustle. Only 1,800 metres long and 400 metres wide, it is home to fewer than 70 residents. With a rich tradition in fishing, phenomenal dishes such as “caldero” (stewed fish prepared in a huge metal kettle), red mullet, sardines and octopus are must tries. A protected marine reserve, Tabarca enjoys clear and unpolluted waters, perfect for a pre-lunch paddle.
