Israel is leading the way in airport security with the unveiling of a new step-on scanner that spares travellers the nuisance of having to remove their shoes.

It is being trialled at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport, which already has a reputation for being one of the safest facilities in the world.

Airport security has been a top priority in the western world since the September 11 attacks on America, but in Israel the issue has been at the forefront of security chiefs’ minds for decades.

While the new step-on scanner must still be used alongside a raft of other security measures, analysts say that if it proves effective it could be rolled out in airports around the globe.

Highlighting its appeal, Nissim Ben-Ezra of Israel’s Airports Authority told Reuters: “This innovation brings enormous logistical value as it significantly cuts down the discomfort and delays associated with standard shoe searches.”
