Airport operator BAA is advising passengers travelling to Heathrow today (July 4) to check with their airlines before they set off, in light of yesterday’s security alert.
Heathrow Terminal 4 was evacuated yesterday after a suspect bag was found, prompting the cancellation of more than 50 flights.
The terminal reopened in the early evening, but BAA is still recommending that those expecting to fly today contact their airline to check on the status of their flights.
Airlines operating from Terminal 4 include British Airways, Air Malta, Brussels Airlines, Kenya Airways, KLM, Qantas, Sri Lankan Airlines and TAM Airlines.
British Airways said it expects to operate a full long-haul schedule today, although some inbound services may not operate because of yesterday’s cancellations. It added that “the vast majority” of its short-haul flights from Terminals 1 and 4 would go ahead today.
The airline also warned that some crew and aircraft are out of position around the world and that disruption to flights, especially long-haul flights, “is likely to continue for several days”.
Customers with delayed bags because of yesterday’s disruptions have been reassured that BA is working to reunite luggage with owners as quickly as possible.
