May proved to be the busiest ever month at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Football fans heading to the Champions League final boosted passenger numbers.

The airport handled more than half-a-million passengers in May. An additional 56 charter flights, including Boeing 747s taking off from the runway for the first time in many years, and 12,000 fans from Liverpool Football Club added up to a 17 per cent increase in numbers.

The airport’s plans for the Champions League match, code-named Operation Zorba, saw temporary check-in desks, marquees and 100 additional staff. Some 7,000 fans departed from John Lennon Airport on the day of the game.

Other highlights in May included the launch of transatlantic services to Toronto and New York with Flyglobespan and Air Malta’s twice weekly scheduled service to Malta.
