Liverpool John Lennon Airport picked up the UK Airport of the Year prize at the Travel Trade Gazette (TTG) awards last week.

The north-west hub beat other shortlisted airports Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands, London Luton and Bristol to claim the award.

A group of travel agents had voted for their favourite UK airport, after which the finalists went before a panel of industry experts, including figures from the Federation of Tour Operators and Global Travel Group.

They chose Liverpool John Lennon ahead of the others based on factors including passenger and airline growth, public transport improvements, environmental initiatives, work done with the local community, and personal experience of the hubs.

Neil Pakey, the airport’s managing director, said: “To win the industry’s most prestigious Airport Award is a recognition of both [owner] Peel’s belief in turning the airport into a real regional gateway and to the employees and businesses who work here to turn the investment into a real experience.”

Airlines operating from Liverpool Airport include Ryanair, easyJet, MyTravel Airways, Wizz Air and Thomsonfly.

The Travel Trade Gazette is the most widely-read weekly newspaper for the travel trade. Other winners at the TTG Awards included Virgin Atlantic (best business airline) and Monarch Airlines (best leisure airline). Air Berlin was highly commended in the latter category.
