Loganair, the Scottish airline, is expecting disruption from the ash cloud of the Grimsvotn volcano over the next couple of days.

It will cancel almost all of its services tomorrow, Tuesday, 24 May. The only flights that will be operated are expected to be the inter-island Orkney routes.

In a message on its website, the Flybe franchise airline states that flights scheduled to depart between 6am and 1pm tomorrow have been cancelled and passengers are advised not to travel to the airport.

The carrier is laying on extra flights this evening, which are available to book on a first-come, first-served basis via the website and reservations department. These are Kirkwall-Edinburgh (takes off at 7:25, arrives 8:40) and Kirkwall-Glasgow (departs 8pm, arrives 9:15pm).

Sumburgh-Glasgow flights (departs 7:50, arrives 9:20) and the Sumburgh-Edinburgh service (leaves at 8pm, arrives 9:30pm) are also available.

Flybe Customer Call Centre number is 0871 700 2000 and Loganair Reservations’ number is 0844 800 2855.

Passengers due to travel tomorrow can rebook flights or apply for a refund. A full list of the flights cancelled tomorrow is on Loganair’s website.

This comes as the Civil Aviation Authority admits that UK flights may be disrupted over the coming days.

Andrew Haines, chief executive of the CAA, told the BBC: “Our number one priority is to ensure the safety of people both onboard aircraft and on the ground.

“We can’t rule out disruption, but the new arrangements that have been put in place since last year’s ash cloud mean the aviation sector is better prepared and will help to reduce any disruption in the event that volcanic ash affects UK airspace.”
