Liverpool Airport looks set to lose its link to London City Airport in the coming weeks as current operator VLM has announced it will be suspending its service.

The airline will end the service on July 1, although it is looking to work with other companies to try and ensure a link is maintained, blaming poor passenger numbers for its decision.

Johan Vanneste, managing director of VLM Airlines, told the BBC website that he accepted people would be disappointed but that he had “to ensure that all of our routes are commercially viable”.

Despite providing assurances earlier this year that it was committed to the route, VLM has been unable to attract enough customers to the service which saw it cut the frequency of fights from three to two per day in February.
