Flight connections from north London to Israel could improve if proposed flights from Luton to Tel Aviv begin later this year.

Israel’s minister for economic affairs, Shmuel Ben-Tovim, told the Totally Jewish website that he was “very hopeful” that a regular scheduled service would begin as early as this autumn.

At the present time Luton only offers flights to Ovda International Airport near Eilat, but a new airline – possibly Thomsonfly – would offer a daily flight to Ben Gurion Airport in the Israeli capital.

As well as this, several flights per week could begin from Manchester to Ben Gurion.

Ben-Tovim said the Israeli government is “doing everything in [its] power to make this happen”.

“Luton has two main advantages,” he said. “It is not as crowded as Heathrow and it is located closer to the main Jewish neighbourhoods of north London.”

Currently, Israeli flag-carrier El Al flies from Ben Gurion International from Heathrow and Stansted airports. British Airways also flies from Heathrow
