Passenger figures for BAA’s UK airports experienced a strong year-on-year increase last month, new figures reveal. According to data released by the airport operator, BAA’s seven UK airports handled a total of 14 million passengers in September, up 2.9 per cent from the same month in 2006.

At Heathrow, figures were up 2.1 per cent, while at Gatwicknumbers rose by 3.9 per cent, Stansted numbers increased by 2.5 per cent and at Southampton passenger figures jumped up by 2.6 per cent.

The key markets also experienced “strong growth”, with other long-haul, European scheduled and North Atlantic flights growing by 5.6 per cent, 5.1 per cent and 4.1 per cent respectively.

In addition, it was revealed that the group’s fastest-growing hubs are still Aberdeen, with an increase of 10.5 per cent and Edinburgh, which experienced an increase in passenger figures of 6.5 per cent. However, Glasgow was down by 0.8 per cent.

The Scottish hubs experienced a strong growth in European scheduled passengers; 32.5 per cent at Edinburgh and 33.1 per cent at Aberdeen.
