The second runway at Manchester Airport is set to be closed for a period of three weeks next month to allow for scheduled engineering work.

Between February 5 and February 29, all aircraft will take-off and land on Runway 1.

However, the airport’s management claimed that the closure was unlikely to cause significant disruption to passengers, pointing out that it was taking place over a traditionally quiet travel period.

Manchester Airport’s managing director, Andrew Cornish, said: “This is important but routine engineering work and we have chosen to do this during February which is traditionally a quieter time before the busy summer period.”

“We hope to be able to manage all the aircraft on Runway 1 and don’t expect this work to cause any significant delays,” he added. “We’re firmly committed to maintaining our high levels of service to both passengers and airlines and are mindful of the impact on the community.”

Earlier this month, Manchester Airport won the accolade for the UK’s Best Regional Airport at the Travel Weekly Globe Travel Awards, with the judges praising it for high levels of customer service.
