The Queen may have already marked the start of her Jubilee celebrations with a tour of the UK, but the rest of us have a little longer to wait until we can celebrate.

We’ve been given an extra day off this year to celebrate Her Majesty’s 60 years on the throne, giving us a nice four-day weekend at the start of June.

It seems that a lot of us are planning on taking advantage of the extra time with a holiday either at home or overseas.

Research by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has revealed that six million of us are planning a trip to coincide with the celebrations.

The survey found that 4 per cent of us are planning an overseas trip, with ABTA saying roads, airports and ferry ports are likely to be very busy.

“The extended June bank holiday will provide a shot in the arm for the British travel industry with six million intending to take a break in the UK or overseas,” said Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive.

“Like last year’s Royal Wedding, the Jubilee shows that extra bank holidays not only give us a chance to recharge our batteries but also give an extremely welcome boost to tourism and many parts of the wider economy.”

It seems that the younger generation will be making the most of the time off, with 12 per cent of 18-24 year-olds taking a holiday.

Despite many of us using the long weekend to get out of the country, there is still a strong royalist trend in the UK and almost three million of us are planning to hold a Jubilee street party.

“The country clearly has a great deal of affection for the Queen with millions intending to have a Jubilee party,” added Mr Tanzer.

So whether you’re jetting off somewhere exotic, planning a staycation, or gathering the neighbours for a 1970s-style street party, be sure to raise a glass to the Queen for giving us that precious extra day off!
