National Geographic has launched its inaugural Best of the World list.

The 20 must-see places for 2014 (including the featured image above Rocky Mountain National Park Photograph by Robin Wilson Photography/Getty Images) were selected by the magazine’s global community of writers, editors and explorers. This year, for the first time, there’s a 21st destination, chosen by its readers.

The list reflects what’s authentic, culturally rich, sustainable and superlative in the world of travel today. The destinations are featured in the December / January issue of Traveler magazine, available from December 3, and online.
