Regular jetsetters will know first-hand how difficult booking your preferred seat can be, but a handy new email service could be about to change all that.

ExpertFlyer has just released a novel tool called Seat Alerts, which sends you automated emails whenever a given seat type becomes available on your route.

Users set their preference according to whether they want an aisle seat, a window seat, an exit-row seat or even a block of seats for multiple travellers.

That selection is then linked to to real-time data provided by 85 airlines, including the likes of British Airways, bmi, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa and Air France.

As soon as your desired seat type becomes available, ExpertFlyer will notify you via email.

“We also have an option that allows you to tell Seat Alerts if a seat designated as Premium Only can satisfy the alert,” ExpertFlyers said on its blog. “Since not everyone can reserve a seat designated for flyers with elite frequent flyer status, Seat Alerts can be told to ignore them.”

The only catch is that you first have to sign up to the company’s Flight Alerts service, which costs $9.99 a month, though this includes a 5-day free trial period.
