Glasgow Airport has announced it is to offer a new direct route to the Spanish capital of Madrid.

The Scottish hub will launch the new twice weekly route aboard Air Nostrum – which is a franchisee partner of Spanish group Iberia – on Tuesday, 1 November.

Managing director of Glasgow Airport, Amanda McMillan, told Business7, “We are continually working to expand our route network and not only will the new Madrid route further strengthen our connectivity with Europe’s major cities, it has huge potential to generate significant in-bound tourism for Glasgow and the west of Scotland.

“It is important for Glasgow to have regular, direct links with European markets and while the introduction of this service is in part a response to demand from the local business community, Madrid is one of Europe’s most popular city-break destinations and will be a big draw for leisure travellers,” she added.

Gordon Matheson, Glasgow City Council leader, told the BBC, “Air Nostrum’s new service to Glasgow from the Spanish capital presents us with a significant opportunity to increase short-break visitors from Spain.

“It also opens up the real possibility of growing international conference delegate numbers from South America through Iberia’s hub at Madrid Barajas airport,” he added.

Glasgow welcomes almost 50,000 Spanish visitors each year to the city, which pulls in £15.5 million worth of revenue for the Scottish hub.
