Plans to build a second runway at Birmingham International Airport have been shelved.

Officials at the airport have decided to build on the existing services at the airport, which they claim means that they will not have to consider building another runway for at least 20 years.

They had originally intended to build the extra runway to allow the airport to cope with an increase in passenger numbers, predicted to rise to around 27 million by 2030.

However, The BBC reports that Birmingham chiefs have now decided to extend the existing runway, as well as building a third passenger terminal.

It is thought that the plans, due to be submitted later this year, will be completed in time for the London Olympics in 2012.

Joe Kelly, the airport’s acting managing director, commented: “We will do everything we can and consult with people before we put in the planning application.

“We will make sure we’re aware of all of their concerns. The airport has always done that and will always continue to do so.”

In addition, Kelly said that Birmingham is hoping to add more long-haul routes to destinations such as the US.
