The one bag rule prohibiting passengers from taking on board more than one piece of hand luggage was relaxed today (January 7), although this has led to confusion as rules vary depending on airline.

Many airports around the UK can now let travellers take extra bags with them into the cabin, but some airlines are keeping the one bag rule in place despite the security relaxation.

The airports allowing two pieces of hand baggage are Birmingham, Cambridge, Cardiff, Heathrow, London City, Manchester, Newcastle, Plymouth, Southampton, Southend and Stansted, as well as the major Scottish airports.

However, the rule will remain in force at hubs such as Bristol, Luton and Gatwick.

Also, Ryanair, easyJet, bmi, Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways will continue to allow passengers to take only one item on board, even if they are flying from an airport where the rule has been relaxed.

Passengers are advised to check with their airline before flying, and should also remember that rules regarding liquids remain in place. Liquids, gels and cosmetics exceeding 100ml are not permitted in hand luggage, and smaller containers must be taken in a transparent plastic bag.
