Unadventurous Brits will increasingly opt for home comforts when it comes to their annual holiday, according to the results of a recent survey.

One in five Brits have never ventured from their home shores for a break, favouring a staycation instead.

The findings from the research, conducted by bug repellent brand Jungle Formula, found that concerns about potential language barriers, falling ill while away and immigration procedures all contribute to Brits’ travel-phobia.

The survey of 2,000 British holidaymakers revealed that 62 per cent attributed their aversion of foreign holidays to their hatred of dealing with airports, while 76 per cent argued that increased travel times for a stint overseas was enough to keep them UK-bound.

Nearly a third of those surveyed argued that fears about their ability to communication effectively kept them from globetrotting, while 31 per cent admitted that they would struggle to master a foreign language.

The economic downturn has also had an impact on Brits’ travel plans, with nearly half (45 per cent) of survey participants arguing that they couldn’t justify splashing out on an overseas break.

Of those who had been abroad on holiday, half argued that they had come down with an illness or suffered an injury while away.

A spokesman for Jungle Formula said: “There was a time when people felt they hadn’t been on holiday unless they had been on a plane. But it seems that more people than ever are content to stay in the UK.

“The recession has also had an effect, with people having to tighten their belts and stop splashing out on luxuries like a foreign holiday.”

Other concerns that keep Brits from exploring other parts of the world include the requirement to ensure that vaccinations are up to date, the fear of taking their little ones into uncharted territory, the distance from home and the stress of packing.
