The Orange Prize for Fiction longlist has been announced, so we thought we’d take a look at where some of the nominated books are set.
Half Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan
A cluster of smoky Berlin bars set the tone for this gem of a book. A young black German trumpet player goes missing following his arrest in a Parisian café, and the story begins to unfold between the salons of Paris and pre-war Berlin.
Island of Wings by Karin Altenberg
Set against the backdrop of St Kilda – the remotest part of the British Isles – the book takes readers on a journey to the island, where characters become entangled in the local community, testing their faith against the pagan wants of the natives.
The Submission by Amy Waldman
It’s New York, it’s 2003, and the book is centred around the trials and tribulations of post 9/11 America.
Starting off in an intense jury meeting, the judges must decide which design should be built on the site of the World Trade Centre, to become the September 11 memorial. The tale soon becomes twisted as they learn that the anonymously submitted design is from a Muslim architect…
