Up, up and away … passenger numbers soar at Luton Airport

Increasing numbers of passengers headed off on holiday from Luton Airport during the first month of this year, with an extra 50,000 people flying out of the airport.

Compared to the same month in 2010, traveller traffic skyrocketed by 9.4 per cent, mainly due to the additional capacity on the airport’s 95 existing routes, according to Glyn Jones, Luton’s managing director.

He said: “Travellers are choosing London Luton for the variety of destinations offered at competitive prices and our excellent transport links to London, the south-east and the Midlands.

“The hard work and planning of London Luton airport operational teams to keep the airport open during the recent freezing weather also helped minimise any disruption,” he added.

In total, Luton attracted nine million passengers travelling to and from Luton airport last year. Many of these were taking advantage of the flights offered by major carriers serving the airport, such as Monarch, easyJet, Flybe and Aer Arann.

Flights to Barcelona, Pisa, Paris and Marrakech were up there among the most popular routes taken by travellers.

From 20 June, the airport will offer flights to Skopje in Macedonia three times a week with Wizz Air.
