On a pristine beach in Cornwall next weekend (July  5 and 6) Veuve Clicquot Polo On The Beach will take place.

Watergate Bay lies three miles north of Newquay. The beach is 1.5 miles of gorgeousness.

 

Sometimes it’s stormy:

 

And surfers love it.

 

Next weekend the beach will resound to the thunder of horses’ hooves and the sharp swish of mallets.

Sometimes seen as an elitist sport, “hockey on horseback” is an easy game to follow.

The sport is thought to have originated in Dubai in 2004. Watergate Bay was the first beach to host it in September 2007 and it always provides an action-packed match as the nimble ponies accelerate, stop and turn very, very quickly.

Best of all, it’s free to attend.
