Formerly a Canadian-only affair, the Red Bull Thre3style DJ competition is entering its third year as a global event. After qualifiers held across Asia, Europe and the US, the roster for the final is almost complete. This Friday, Toronto’s Mod Club Theatre plays host to the last remaining qualifying round for competitors from Canada.

Using either turntables or CDJs, the eight regional finalist DJs will each play a set that lasts exactly 15 minutes before a packed and eager crowd. The only stipulation is that three music genres must be incorporated into the set.

Competitors are judged on a number of criteria such as track selection, creativity, skills and stage presence. But the audience plays the most important role in the event, judging the DJs with their response. Friday’s winner will join DJs from nine other countries in Paris later in the year for the international final.

Once merely the act of entertaining others with recorded music, DJing has evolved into a celebrated art form. While the technical aspect of beat-matching tracks so that they seamlessly connect remains at its heart, today’s best DJs source cutting-edge music and then manipulate it live to create something new on the spot – all in the service of rocking the crowd before them.

Visitors can experience some of the world’s foremost up and coming talent at the Mod Club Theatre this Friday. It’s a chance to rock out to eight incredible sets, and – most importantly – as a part of the crowd, have a hand (or should we say dance and scream) in who gets selected for the international final later in the year.
