The days of measuring out cosmetics into containers holding just 100ml and tasting baby formula at the security checkpoint may be numbered – for travellers passing through the UK that is.

Newspapers at the weekend reported that Philip Hammond, the transport secretary, had said the restrictions would be eased from next April. This has been clarified to apply only to those passengers who are making connections at UK and European Union airports. The restrictions will remain in place for UK travellers until 2013 at the earliest.

Aviation industry leaders, such as Michael O’Leary, the Ryanair boss, and Martin Broughton, BA chairman, recently called for a relaxation of stringent security measures.

In October, Mr Broughton addressed the annual conference of the UK Airport Operators Association in London and called many of the current security checks “redundant”.
