Following last week’s news that easyJet is to start flying sunshine routes from Southend Airport, another airline is said to be keen to add services from the Essex airport.
The Echo reports that Join Airlines is planning to offer flights to cities in France, Germany and the Netherlands.
Join, a Dutch carrier, is considering offering flights to Caen (France), Amsterdam, Groningen (Netherlands) and Cologne/Bonn (Germany). The focus would be on business travel with Bernard Jacobs, the project director, telling the Echo: “The announcement of easyJet starting operations at Southend as well is good news for all of us.
“It helps very much in creating awareness of Southend Airport as an ideal alternative to London’s airports.”
Alastair Welch, Southend Airport’s managing director, told the Echo that other carriers would be following in easyJet’s vapour trail: “I can say the announcement about easyJet won’t be the last announcement of new routes from the airport in the run-up to the Olympics.”
EasyJet will start flying to Ibiza, Barcelona and Faro later this year and other destinations on its route map are expected to be Belfast, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Madrid, Milan and Berlin.
