More than two million holidaymakers will jet off this Easter and Spain is the top destination of choice, according to research from travel association ABTA.

Travel numbers have been boosted by the extra bank holiday provided by the royal wedding on 29 April, with many booking the time between the bank holidays off to enjoy 11 work-free days.

The Canary Islands and the Costa del Sol were found to be the most popular locations in Spain, whilst others are heading to hotspots such as Egypt, Turkey, Florida and Dubai. Many are also using their time off to take a quick city break in locations such as Dublin, New York, Amsterdam and Rome.

With the weather looking up at the moment, many are also expected to take a break somewhere in the UK, with London being the most popular choice and seaside resorts like Blackpool, Bournemouth and Brighton all looking set for a busy few days.

John McEwan, ABTA Chairman, said, “Easter is the traditional curtain raiser to the summer and the Royal Wedding bank holiday has given a special boost to bookings. I am delighted to see that so many of our customers are taking advantage of the extra days off either heading off overseas or taking a break closer to home.”
