Stansted Airport could offer flights to the Far East in the future, which will add to its steadily growing schedule of long-haul services.

Last month MAXjet began flying from the Essex hub to Los Angeles (see related Cheapflights story), and other long-haul destinations on offer include Toronto Hamilton and Washington. American Airlines will begin flying to New York JFK in October.

Now a spokesman has confirmed that Stansted is looking at expanding eastwards.

“There are quite a few new routes and we’re looking at other parts of the world and discussing with other airlines to get a network across the Far East and more into America,” he said.

Stansted Airport, which is around 45 minutes from central London by train, opened its current passenger terminal in 1991 and has grown to offer flights to 160 destinations.

It has overtaken Manchester as the UK’s third biggest airport and there are plans afoot to improve the passenger experience.

“We put some extra check-in aisles to extend the security lane,” the spokesman continued.
