Swiss International Air Lines and Lufthansa have been voted the joint No. 1 airline in Europe by Capital magazine’s annual survey.

The two national carriers – which also ranked joint sixth among intercontinental carriers – also shared the accolade with Austrian Airlines.

SWISS spokesman Christoph Beckmann quipped: “The readers of Capital have confirmed our own ‘capital’: our strong commitment to a punctual performance and attentive personal care.”

The airline is currently in the process of refitting its 52-craft fleet with new seats that afford more legroom and greater comfort.

“We want to make our customers’ travel experience even pleasanter,” Beckmann asserted. “That’s why we’re constantly investing in our product and paying so much attention to quality in every detail.”

The Capital survey was based on responses from more than 1,000 regular flyers, who were quizzed on six categories: value for money, sense of safety, service, seating comfort, in-flight food and drink and punctuality.
