If Scotland’s the birthplace of golf, then you could say that Georgia is where the game grew up. Throughout the 1920s and early 1930s Bobby Jones, who later became one of golf’s greatest icons and Atlanta’s most famous sons, dominated the amateur and professional games.
In founding the Augusta National Golf Club and the legendary Masters tournament played on the same course Jones not only continued a long-established tradition of sculpting a great course out of a gorgeous Georgia forest, but also cemented The Peach State’s place in golfing history.
Unfortunately, Augusta’s limited and strict membership policy makes it the hardest course in the world to gain access to – frankly, unless you’re pals with one its members you’ve as much chance of playing its hallowed 18-holes as you’ve got of taking a stroll on the moon!
But that doesn’t mean you can’t “ruin a good walk” against a picturesque backdrop of evergreen firs, rhododendrons and azaleas, far from it. There are several public courses in and around Atlanta where you can pit your game against Georgia’s famed rolling fairways and lush greens. Here’s our pick.
