If you’ve seen the words Hurricane Fly bandied about, fear not. It isn’t some wild wind coming to tear down your roof. It’s a darn fast horse that has been attracting attention ahead of the Cheltenham Festival, which kicks off today in the Cotswolds – the start of the National Hunt season.
Royalty and aristocrats started thoroughbred horse racing in England, which is why it’s often referred to as “The Sport of Kings”. Today’s events, however, are an excuse to get dolled up, complete with fancy hat, quaff Bolly and have a flutter. There are some die-hard fans too. But we’ll stick with the fun for this one.
So dust off your glad rags, get shopping for the perfect hat and book yourself a ticket to one of these, top five British horse racing festivals, in date order:
1. The Cheltenham Festival – 13-16 March, Cheltenham
2. Grand National Meeting – 12-14 April, Aintree
3. Investec Derby Festival – 1-2 June, Epsom Downs
4. Glorious Goodwood – 31 July-4 August, Sussex
5. William Hill Winter Festival – 26 and 27 December, Kempton
