The linking of cultures will be the theme of the UN World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) World Tourism Day 2011.
Due to take place on 27 September, the day will celebrate the booming tourism industry and highlight the ways in which it brings together the different global cultures.
According to UNWTO, around 940 million travellers paid a visit to a foreign country last year, taking in different forms of culture including music, artwork, food and museums.
The linking cultures theme will also show how travelling to foreign countries can help to promote global understanding between countries.
Taleb Rifai, UNWTO chairman, said, “Culture is one of our most precious assets and needs protecting. As we launch World Tourism Day 2011, I call on all people to conduct tourism in a way that preserves and enriches the cultural wealth of the world for future generations.”
UNWTO has announced that it will be focusing on the development of tourism in Tunisia this year, working alongside the Tunisian government to boost understanding of and interest in the country for international visitors.
