A new rail link looks set to provide a direct service from mid-Wales to Birmingham International Airport, the BBC reports.

This December, Arriva Trains Wales will complete its extension of the Aberystwyth to New Street link which will see trains carrying on through to the airport.

A similar service from Chester to the gateway will also begin at the end of the year, Arriva has said, making use of the Cambrian line which links Wales to England.

The announcement of the rail extensions comes as new figures from Birmingham International show that almost one million passengers passed through its concourse in June.

Those figures comprised 640,793 scheduled passengers and 296,075 charter travellers across both of its terminals – marking a year-on-year increase of 2.8 per cent.
