Caracas is situated amid some of the most stunning mountainscapes you will ever see. Travellers who take flights to Caracas for a hiking holiday will love the various scenic trails through the hills and valleys. An unforgettable way to see the scenery of this part of Venezuela, though, is to take the Teleferico: a cable car that swings you high above the mountains and the rich vegetation of the forests. Back down in the city centre, there are plenty of things for all kinds of travellers to do. Go to the Centro de Arte La Estancia and listen to some traditional Venezuelan music. The Centro de Arte Los Galpones is a brilliant place to view some beautiful contemporary art works and is a very peaceful environment. One of the key historical sites in the city is the Casa Natal & Museo Bolivar. Both of these honour Simon Bolivar, or ‘The Liberator’ (‘El Liberator’) who achieved Venezuelan independence from Spain. The house will show you where Bolivar was born, whilst the adjacent museum is perfect for learning more about the rich history of this part of Venezuela, and in particular its quest for independence.
Taxis are plentiful in Caracas, so you can hail one in the street whenever you need to get from A to B. Remember, though, that in this city the taxis do not have any meters, so it is best to agree on a price with the driver before you depart. It is usual to bargain with the driver, as it is customary for them to quote you an initial price far in excess of what they are willing to accept. Many travellers take advantage of specialised tour buses to explore the key sights of the city, whilst others find it more convenient to hire a car. There is also a metro system.
They key airport serving fights to Caracas is Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS), named after El Liberator. It is located 13 miles (21 km) from the city centre and you can reach the city by an airport shuttle, a private taxi, or by hiring a car.
