How to find the best deals for United Airlines flights

United advertises its sale fares on its home page. It also has a news and deals section in which it publishes its special fares. Best of all, the airline has a low-fare guarantee. Book on united.com and if you find a lower fare - by at least £5 each-way by midnight (GMT) on the same day - for the same United, United Express or Ted itinerary, inform the airline and it will reissue the ticket and refund the difference in fare.

Check-in

Check-in online up to 24 hours before your flight. Online check-in is available until two hours before an international flight.

Baggage

Carry-on: one bag and one personal item. The bag should not be more than 23 x 35 x 56 cm (length x width x height) or 114 linear cm. 

Checked: Economy-Class passengers are allowed to check-in two bags with a maximum weight per bag of 23kg. First and Business-Class flyers can bring two bags up to 32kg each. Global Services, 1K, Premier Executive and Star Alliance Gold flyers are permitted to bring three bags up to 32kg each. 

Excess: The oversized baggage fee is $200 per bag for travel between North America and Europe. The overweight baggage handling fee (travel between North America and Europe) is $150 per bag for items weighing between 23kg and 31kg (51 - 70lbs) and $350 per bag for items between 32kg and 45kg (71 - 100lbs).

Legroom

Varies according to aircraft. In general, Economy Class 31-32 inches, Economy Plus 35-36 inches, Business Class 55 inches, First Class 88 inches.

Passenger Change Details

Depends on the ticket purchased. If you buy a non-refundable ticket, there will be a change fee plus any difference in the fare. United notes that the name on an airline ticket cannot be changed or given to someone else to use.

Child Fares

Infant discounts may be offered based on the destination. Contact United Reservations for fare details and to book a seat for an infant. Children between 2 and 11 years pay about 75 per cent of the adult fare.

There is a small discount on international flights of about 10 per cent for seniors.

Carrying Musical Instruments

Standard baggage allowances apply. A separate seat may be purchased to carry a large or fragile instrument instead of checking it. It's a good idea to make arrangements for large instruments prior to the date of departure. Checked items that exceed the standard allowance are subject to additional fees.

In-flight Service

The in-flight service in Economy Class includes complimentary video and audio on all flights, seat-back video screens on all international three-cabin 767-300 and 777 aircraft, complimentary copy of Hemispheres magazine, pillows and blankets, complimentary meal service and drinks. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase. Business Class ramps up the service with a pre-departure beverage service, room for work in United Business seats and a complimentary amenity kit.
