The largest of the Aegean islands, Lesbos (also spelt Lesvos) is an unspoilt and authentic holiday destination for those wishing to discover the "real" Greece. The island is popular both with travellers in search of the classic sun-and-sea beach holidays and also with botanists, who book flights to Lesbos to explore its spectacular flora and fauna. The island’s main commodities are olive oil and ouzo, the aniseed flavoured aperitif that is drunk throughout Greece. Inland, much of the countryside is covered by impressive olive groves. There are many organised tours for walking, cycling and hiking throughout the interior.

Along the coast are a range of clean sandy blue-flag beaches. Many are relatively quiet, though watersports are still to be found. Sigri is one of the most popular destinations for tourists. The town is situated near a petrified forest and the Natural History Museum of Sigri has many remains and petrified stumps. Lesbos flights touch down at the airport at Mytilene, the capital city. From here it is easy to travel to other parts of the island, though many tourists like to spend a few days in the town itself.

Lesbos Insider Information

  • Try the ouzo (an aniseed drink) when the locals do – around sunset before the evening meal. The best ouzo in Greece is thought to be produced in Lesbos and the road verges are often lined with yellow clusters of aniseed.
  • Discover the island’s best beach at Eressos.
  • Visit Molivos which has a castle with brightly coloured woodwork up to the battlements that looks very dramatic when floodlit at night.
