The leafy city of Allentown lies in the heart of Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania which is bounded by the mighty mountains of the Appalachian range. The beautiful Lehigh River flows through Allentown, as well as the picturesque canal system that was built during the 19th century Industrial Revolution. The city is famous for its wealth of parks and green spaces: Cedar Creek Parkway and Bicentennial Park are well worth a visit. Allentown’s long history, dating back to 1762, has left it with an interesting architectural heritage. There are Victorian houses, stately homes, century old industrial buildings and Federal rowhomes. It also has a place in the history books for successfully concealing the Liberty Bell during the American Revolutionary War from the British Army. Today the Liberty Bell Museum marks the spot where the famous bell was hidden. There is vibrant cultural scene in Allentown with an extensive Art Museum, Heritage Museum and the America On Wheels Museum amongst others. Live venues are aplenty with the city orchestra performing at the Symphony Hall, the Nineteenth Street Theatre offering a varied programme of productions and the PPL Centre seating 10,000. The centre hosts shows by world class music artists and sporting events such as the American Ice Hockey League.
Daily regional bus and coach services are available to New York City, Philadelphia and Atlantic City. A great way to discover the city environs is by bike and making use of the fabulous parks and gardens system, canal tow paths and extensive trails. Exploring on foot the main central area is a good option or try a walking tour of the historic districts in Allentown to soak up the ambience of this characterful American city.
Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) is easily accessible within 15 minutes from most parts of Allentown. There is a convenient local bus service provided by LANTA and several taxi and limo companies operating in the city.
