Local councillors are set to press the Scottish government to make efforts to safeguard routes between Inverness Airport and both London Heathrow and London Gatwick.

The calls come in the wake of bmi’s decision to suspend its Inverness to Heathrow service at the end of March, with the airline blaming the decision on poor ticket sales.

Now the BBC has reported that representatives of the Highland Council will urge the Scottish executive to “carefully examine” the protection of services between Inverness and London’s airports.

When bmi’s decision was originally announced earlier this month, the Scottish transport minister, Stewart Stevenson, said he would be looking to meet with the airline to urge them to rethink the change.

“It is also particularly disappointing, given Highlands and Islands Airports efforts to achieve a better scheduling of the service, which would have gone a long way to improving its viability,” he told the broadcaster at the time.

In addition to the soon-to-end bmi flights, Inverness is currently linked to London by both easyJet and Flybe to Gatwick and easyJet to Luton route.
